Rethinking the city center

Integrated inner city concept Bremerhaven

Bremerhaven's city center is in a state of upheaval - due to changing customer behavior, competition from increasing online retail, the disappearance of owner-operated stores, and visible vacancies. And the Corona pandemic is dramatically amplifying the already noticeable effects of digitization in retail.

After the first phase of the Corona crisis, the city of Bremerhaven launched extensive immediate measures to strengthen the city center. These short- to medium-term measures are now to be bundled into an overall concept and integrated into a long-term development perspective with an implementation strategy. As a guideline for the development of Bremerhaven's inner city, the inner city concept is intended to provide reliable orientation for all those involved in its implementation. The process was initiated by the magistrate of the city of Bremerhaven, with the participation of other urban actors. Urbanista was commissioned to conduct a dialogue with citizens, politicians, administrators and other local stakeholders. The results of the online dialogue as well as the one-week future camp with workshops and lectures on site are part of the inner city concept for Bremerhaven.
